UNESCO World Conference on ESD - Newsletter 22 January 2009

Dear reader,

 

Only 67 days are left until the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) begins on 31 March 2009 in Bonn, Germany. Organizers of the Conference are UNESCO and the German Ministry of Education and Research, in cooperation with the German Commission for UNESCO. The World Conference newsletter will from now on regularly inform you about preparations for the World Conference.

High-Level Segment – 36 Ministers have already confirmed participation

On the afternoon of the first conference day, a High-Level Segment will take place. Ministers from all over the world as well as high-level representatives of United Nations Agencies are invited to attend. 36 Ministers from all world regions have already confirmed their participation, among them Japan, Sweden, El Salvador, Qatar and Namibia.  More

UNESCO Member States and National Commissions - Register Now

Ministries of Education of all UNESCO Member States have been invited to register two experts as participants. Three additional experts per Member State may participate upon request to ESDConference2009@unesco.org. Member States may thus send a total of five participants in addition to their Minister. The deadline for registration is 31 January 2009. Moreover, one expert per National Commission will be invited; another expert may participate upon request. National Commissions may send a total of two participants. Invitation letters to National Commissions will go out shortly. The registration deadline for National Commissions is 10 February 2009.  More

Sign-up for Member States and UN Agencies Exhibition

UNESCO Member States and United Nations Agencies have the opportunity to present their activities in the context of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development in an exhibition area located in an annex to the World Conference venue. Exhibition booths must be organized and funded by exhibiting Member States / UN Agencies. The extended deadline for registration is 31 January 2009.  More

Second Meeting of the International Advisory Group

On 30 and 31 October 2008, the International Advisory Group (IAG) for the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development met for the second time. The meeting took place at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, where the Group's 14 experts on Education for Sustainable Development provided advice on preparations for the World Conference.  More

Media partnership for World Conference signed with Deutsche Welle

A media partnership agreement regarding the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development was signed with Deutsche Welle, Germany's international broadcaster. Among other things, Deutsche Welle will produce audio and video spots for the World Conference in which people from across the world highlight the relevance of Education for Sustainable Development to their individual lives.  More

Descriptions of project-based workshops now online

In the afternoon of the second conference day all participants will be invited to participate in a workshop at an ESD project in the Bonn region. Information on where these workshops will take place and what they offer is now available on the Conference website. Abstracts of the regular Conference workshops will go online shortly.  More

International Forum on ESD in Tokyo

The International Forum on Education for Sustainable Development took place from 3 to 5 December 2008 at the United Nations University in Tokyo, Japan. It was organized by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the Japanese National Commission for UNESCO, UNESCO, and the Asia/Pacific Cultural Center for UNESCO. Co-organizers were the United Nations University (UNU) and Miyagi University of Education. Recommendations for the Bonn Conference, drafted by the participants of the forum, can be downloaded  here

MESA International Conference on ESD

The first International Conference on Mainstreaming Environment and Sustainability in African Universities was held in Nairobi, Kenya from 24 to 28 November 2008. The meeting was attended by university professors and lecturers, government officials, students, and project partners, including the private sector and academic organisations; in total, over 200 people from 40 countries took part.  More

ESD Workshop in Gothenburg

In the lead-up to the Bonn Conference, the workshop "Visions and preparations for a common blueprint on Education for Sustainable Development" took place from 11 to 12 November 2008 in Gothenburg, Sweden. It was organized by Chalmers University of Technology, the University of Gothenburg, the Swedish Ministry of Education and Research, the Swedish National Commission for UNESCO and the Swedish International Centre of Education for Sustainable Development. International Conference on Education for Sustainable Development in Bordeaux

In the lead-up to the UNESCO World Conference on ESD, the Bordeaux conference brought together French and foreign specialists in Education for Sustainable Development from 27 to 29 October 2008. Participants reviewed the progress made during the 2005-2008 period and drew up strategies to be implemented for the 2009-2014 period.
