High-level Segment

The World Conference comprised a High-Level Segment, which took place on the afternoon of the first Conference day (31 March 2009). The German Federal Minister of Education and Research, Annette Schavan, hosted the session alongside the president of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany, Henry Tesch, and the UNESCO Assistant Director-General, Nicholas Burnett (representing UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura). Furthermore, 48 Ministers and Vice Minsters attended the event. Among them were Russian, Swedish, and Kenyan Ministers of Education as well as Japanese, Chinese, and Indonesian Vice Ministers of Education.
The participants pointed out the danger educational systems in deprived countries are facing during times of crisis. Moreover, they called the actors of ESD not only in the member states but also on an international level to intensify their cooperation.
