The organizers of the World Conference on ESD also made sure that results of international meetings on ESD that took place in advance of the World Conference were taken into account in the preparation of the event. 

3rd All-Russian Conference on Ecological Education in the Framework of the DESD
The 3rd All-Russian Conference on "Ecological Education in the Framework of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (global and regional aspects)" was organized in Khanty-Mansyisk Autonomous District-Yugra, Russian Federation, as part of the International Ecological Action "To Save and to Preserve" from June 11 to 13. The Conference was attended by some 70 participants from all over the Russian Federation and representing many stakeholder groups.

International Conference on Education for Sustainable Development in Bordeaux
In the lead-up to the UNESCO World Conference on ESD in Bonn, Germany, in 2009, the Bordeaux event brought together French and foreign specialists in Education for Sustainable Development from October 27-29 2008. Participants reviewed the progress made during the 2005-2008 period and drew up the strategies to be implemented for the 2009-2014 period.

ESD-Workshop in Gothenborg, Sweden
In the lead-up to the World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development, the workshop "Visions and preparations for a common blueprint on Education for Sustainable Development" took place from 11 to 12 November 2008 in Gothenborg, Sweden. It was organized by Chalmers University of Technology and University of Gothenburg together with the Swedish Ministry of Education and Research, the Swedish National Commission for UNESCO and the Swedish International Centre of Education for Sustainable Development.

MESA International Conference on ESD
In the lead-up to the 2009 World ESD Conference, the first International Conference of the Mainstreaming Environment and Sustainability in Africa (MESA) Programme was held from 24 to 28 November at the UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. Organizers of the event are the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), UNESCO, Horn of Africa Regional Environment Centre and Network (HoA-RECN), the Association of African Universities (AAU), and the Southern African Development Cooperation–Regional Environmental Education Programme (SADC-REEP).

International Forum on ESD in Tokyo
The International Forum on Education for Sustainable Development took place from 3 to 5 December 2008 at the United Nations University in Tokyo, Japan. It was organized by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, UNESCO, the United Nations University (UNU), and the Asia/Pacific Cultural Center for UNESCO.

Capacity-building workshops Asia-Pacific

To assist UNESCO Member States in the Asia-Pacific, to coordinate ESD at the national level, in 2008, UNESCO Bangkok, with the contributions of the Japanese Funds in Trust, conducted a series of capacity building workshops throughout the region. The workshops aimed to prepare for the World Conference on ESD to be held in Bonn, Germany in March/April 2009, to build additional capacity for ESD leadership, coordination and monitoring at the national level and to meet the immediate challenges of implementing ESD in the region.

More than 50 senior-level ministerial representatives from 24 countries have participated so far in one of five sub-regional workshops along with members of civil society, higher education and the private sector. The workshops were conducted in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (Central Asia), Ha Long Bay, Viet Nam (Mekong sub-region), Manila, Philippines (South-East Asia), Hangzhou, China (East Asia) and Colombo, Sri Lanka (South Asia).
